My apologies if this is sent out twice. It didn't seem to go through the
first time.
Annual AOU Student Quiz Bowl REQUEST FOR PARTICIPANTS
Organized by: The AOU Student Affairs Committee
Contacts: Jim Rivers (rivers at lifesci.ucsb.edu), Julie Garvin
(julesgarvin at hotmail.com)
Date & Time: 10 August 2007 (Friday) at 20:30-22:00
Location: Yellowstone Ballroom in the Wyoming Union, University of Wyoming
Cost: Free!!
Prizes: Each member of the winning team will receive a pair of binoculars
generously donated by Eagle Optics; assorted books and other prizes will be
awarded to the 2nd and 3rd place teams.
Participants: Participation is limited to current students who are members
in good standing in the AOU at the time of sign-up. We can accommodate 9
teams for the competition, each with 3 members. Teams consisting of students
with different areas of expertise will do best because of the varied subject
matter of the questions. This is an excellent opportunity to meet other
students, participate in the conference, and show off your knowledge.
Participation will be based on a first-come first-served basis, so get your
teams together early. Any current student member of the AOU is eligible.
Description: This will be a Jeopardy-style quiz bowl. If you're unsure how
Jeopardy is played, see http://zone.msn.com/en/jeopardy/default.htm. In
this quiz bowl, teams of three will compete to answer general knowledge
questions on topics that may include: avian structure and function,
morphology, behavior, taxonomy, genetics, identification of birds by sight
or sound, birds in the news, famous ornithologists, and birds in popular
culture. Each of the 9 teams will participate in a timed match against 2
other teams where up to 25 general ornithological knowledge questions will
be asked. The point values of the questions will vary, with more difficult
questions being worth a higher point value. At the end of each timed match,
one final question will be asked where teams can wager up to all of their
point value. The winning teams from each first-round match will then play in
the championship round that will be played in the same manner as the first
round. Each member of the winning team in the championship round will
receive a pair of binoculars generously donated by Eagle Optics binoculars.
Prizes for the runner up teams in the championship round will include
ornithology-related books and possibly gear relevant to the field.
How to sign up: Send an email to Julie Garvin (julesgarvin at hotmail.com) with
"AOU Quiz Bowl" in the subject line and the following information: (1) team
name and (2) email address, institution, and the OSNA member number for each
team member. Note: given logistical constraints, play is limited to the
first 9 teams that sign up.
Deadline: Please submit team information to Julie by no later than June 30.
If there is sufficient room, the deadline may be extended.
