Hi everyone, the AOU's Student Affairs Committee has been discussing ideas
regarding a student-oriented trip to take place after the AOU 2007 meeting
in Laramie, WY, and we'd like your opinions on which trip sounds like a
better time (or deal!). We are not committed to either trip idea at this
time and your feedback will help us decide on which trip students would most
likely participate in. Here are the options:
1. Go camping from 12 Aug-15 Aug at a campground in the Medicine Bow
National Forest (http://www.fs.fed.us/r2/mbr/), located ~45 minutes from
Laramie, WY. The trip could potentially include hiking and birding, in
addition to other activities the group decides upon. The trip cost would be
~$55/person and include: food, cooking equipment and utensils, water
purifiers, tents, and transportation to the site. Students would need to
bring a sleeping bag, clothes, and their own snack food. The dates of the
trip could be longer or shorter depending on what feedback we receive.
2. Visit the AMK Ranch Research Station
(http://uwadmnweb.uwyo.edu/Zoology/UWNPSRS/UWNPSRS.htm), a facility run by
the University of Wyoming at Laramie and located in the Grand Teton
Mountains. This research facility is located 6 hrs from Laramie, and
because of the distance, would mean the trip would last from 12-15 Aug. At
the station, we have the option to stay in cabins that feature beds/cots,
bathrooms, and cooking facilities. The trip cost would be ~$140/person and
include food and transportation to the research site; students would be
responsible for their own bed sheets, towels, and snack food. At the
station, there will be opportunities for hiking and birding, and perhaps a
tour of the facility and interactions with researchers working at the site.
Whichever trip is ultimately decided upon, the number of participants will
be limited to around 15 people. We would appreciate learning what you
the student might hypothetically choose if you were attending the meeting
and
had the time to hang out with like-minded folks for a couple of days after
the meeting .
Please let us know which trip you would prefer as soon as possible so we can
make arrangements for the
trip.
Thanks for your time and attention. We look forward to your responses!
Cheers,
Doug Robinson & Julie Garvin
